Library Board
GET INVOLVED

While there are many opportunities for volunteering at the library, perhaps serving as a board member is one of the most challenging and rewarding of volunteer assignments. If you have a strong belief in public libraries and are willing to commit your time and skills for the finest possible library service, this may be the job for you. We especially look for people that have skills in technology, finances, public relations and other skills beneficial in ensuring a healthy future for our library.

This group has the final responsibility to see that the Mendon Public Library provides the best possible library service to the community of Mendon. To accomplish this goal, duties of the Library Board fall into one of the following six categories, according to the New York State Association of Library Boards.

· Select and hire a qualified library manager or director

· To secure adequate funding for the library’s service program

· Stewardship and accountability in the use of that funding

· To adopt policies and rules regarding library use

· To plan and evaluate the library’s service program

· To promote the library to the community and society in general

The Mendon Library Board is an active board, meeting at least one night per month on the first Tuesday. We consider appointment to the library board an honor. We take pride in working in a collaborate environment. Prospective board members are encouraged to review the libraries mission statement, programs, strategic plan and financial status of the library to see if the library is an organization they can support through using their professional skills, and required time commitment.

The Town of Mendon appoints members of the Library Board of Trustees for a five year term beginning on January 1, of the year of appointment. Occasionally, a member of the Board of Trustees may find they have to leave their commitment, in that case the Library current Board of Trustees will appoint a member to fill the remainder of the unexpired term.

If becoming a board of trustee member appeals you, you are encouraged to talk to a board member and/or send a letter of interest and resume to the Library Board President, in care of the Library.
