Volunteers are essential to Mendon Public Library's service to customers. Volunteers bring the library enthusiasm, energy, added talents, and a fresh perspective. You can help the library by volunteering your time and talents. In 2006, volunteers contributed more than 300 hours in service to the Library.
Volunteer opportunities are available for teens through senior citizens. The basic responsibility of a volunteer is to promise to give time and expertise to the library and to follow through on that promise. The volunteer who stays on the job will find that responsibilities may grow as the job continues: each volunteers's job will evolve in an individual way. We appreciate our volunteers and try to make your experience pleasurable and rewarding.
If you think the volunteering at the library is for you, stop by the library or call to see what possibilities exist.
A sampling of our volunteer opportunities;
- Children's Programs: You can assist the children's librarian during Storytime, and special programs held throughout the year. Share art and crafts with the children.
- Internet: Teach and assist patrons with computer and internet usage.
- Home Delivery: Select, check out and deliver books to elderly and shut-ins, keeping records of what they've read. (Requires a car.)
- Local History & Genealogy: Assist with clipping newspapers, indexing, filing, alphabetizing and use of microfilm readers.
- Shelving: Put book carts in order, return items to shelves, shelf-read, straighten. (requires knowledge of Dewey Decimal System and alphabetizing.)
- Mending: Repair damaged books for use in the collection again.
- Yard Work: We rely solely on volunteers for planting, weeding and raking of our yard. If you have a few minutes we would love to have you help us out.
- Friends: Friends volunteers do a mailing each year and sort books in preparation for the book sale. Click here for more information.
- Board of Trustees: The library is governed by an eleven member volunteer Board of Trustees. Click here for more information.
- Summer Reading Program: Our summer reading program provides a unique opportunity for teens to gain valuable community service hours, while helping children to read during the summer. Applications are taken in April and May. Call the library for more information.
