The original white brick library was built during the Depression in 1935.
Local population at that time was 2,600.
The original 1,000 sq. ft. library now holds our Biography, Young Adult, Graphic Novels, Classics, Career Counseling, Local Government, Science Fiction and Fantasy collections. Additionally this space is a story time room, public meeting area and staff office.
Our library is only 700 square feet larger than the average home in Mendon.
We can accommodate a maximum of 20 people in our program area.
Our library has more than 40,000 books but shelving space for only 22,000.
The addition to the original library was built in 1975. This increased the total space for collections by 2,000 sq. ft.
Local population at that time was 4,500.
Today’s estimated population is 8,700 based on 2006 census data.
This same 2,000 sq. ft. is used today to house Adult, Children’s, Local History and Reference collections, reading areas, two story time areas, computers, a circulation desk and minimal office space. Bathrooms are in the basement.
