Why Do We Need a New Library?
View the movie below to see one local family's perpsective on why our current library does not meet their needs.

Architect Selected for New Library
On January 26, Mendon Town Board approved the Library Project Facilities Committee recommendation for the new library project architect, HBT Architects of Pittsford, NY. The committee was impressed with HBT’s ability to impart a subtle yet distinctive look in their designs while creating building solutions that fit into client’s budgets as well as the surrounding architecture. Their tagline “start by thinking” was evident during their interview as well as in the examples of their work.

HBT, which began in 2000, was selected from seven architecture firms that responded to the Town’s request for qualifications. Their project experience is varied and includes Bushnell Basin’s Fire Hall, Camp Arrowhead, RIT Student Union at NTID, Wood Library (Canandaigua), Camp Stella Maris, and St. Bernard’s School of Theology and Ministry.

An initial meeting with the Facilities Committee and HBT took place on February 2. Discussion topics included involvement of town residents and library staff in the design process, project timeline, using ”green” building materials, and the building site. On February 7, HBT met with library staff to better understand work flow processes and seek their input on the design and layout of the new library.

HBT Architects led two community input design sessions on Saturday, March 28 and Saturday, April 4 to allow town residents the chance to be involved in the library design process. Their Public Design Charrette Report summarizes community input from these sessions.

New Library Underway
On August 31, 2009 site preparation began for the new Mendon Public Library at 22 N. Main Street, Honeoye Falls. Many town residents came out to watch the event. The existing barn-like structure had housed several families and businesses over the decades. The Town of Mendon purchased this property so a new library can be constructed with Main Street access. Site preparation will continue through 2009. Construction of the new library will begin in 2010 and be completed in 2011.

Demolition of the existing structure began on August 31 and finished on September 1. Removal of debris was completed on September 2.

Groundbreaking Ceremony Held on Saturday, June 20
Over 125 people joined in the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Mendon Public Library on Saturday, June 20, including the following dignitaries: Congressman Eric Massa, a representative from State Assemblyman Joe Errigo's office, County Executive Maggie Brooks, County Legislator Jeff Adair, Monroe County Library System Director Patty Uttaro, Town of Mendon Supervisor Ian McNabb, and Honeoye Falls Mayor Rick Milne. HBT Architects unveiled a rendering of the new library. The ceremony was scheduled to take place at 22 N.
